For over four years, the Empowered Girl Series has been at the heart of Jodeb Foundation’s mission to equip young girls with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to shape their own futures. From vocational training to mentorship and education-focused programs, this initiative has evolved into a transformational movement, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of countless young women across Ghana.
Through resilience, innovation, and unwavering commitment, the series has adapted to challenges, embraced new opportunities, and expanded its reach. Let’s take a chronological look at how each year built upon the last, empowering young girls through skills, mentorship, and education.
2020: Laying the Foundation Amidst Global Uncertainty
The COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to a standstill, creating unprecedented challenges for communities and education systems alike. In many rural areas, school closures and economic instability placed adolescent girls at greater risk of early marriage, financial hardship, and school dropouts.
Despite these challenges, Jodeb Foundation remained committed to ensuring that young girls had access to opportunities for growth and resilience.
Key Highlights of the 2020 Empowered Girl Series
✅ Life Skills Training: Sessions focused on self-reliance, encouraging young girls to develop entrepreneurial and leadership skills.
✅ Health & Hygiene Education: Workshops on menstrual hygiene management and personal care empowered girls to take charge of their well-being.
✅ Entrepreneurial Mindset: In a time of limited economic opportunities, participants were introduced to small-scale business ideas, teaching them financial independence strategies.
As the world struggled to adapt to new realities, the Empowered Girl Series 2020 served as a beacon of hope, showing that even in the face of adversity, growth and learning were still possible.
2021: Expanding the Mission – Skills, Confidence, and Economic Independence
Building on the resilience cultivated in 2020, Jodeb Foundation took the Empowered Girl Series a step further in 2021, expanding its vocational training efforts and mentorship programs to equip young girls with tangible economic skills.
Many participants from the previous year had expressed a desire to learn practical skills that could help them become financially independent. Responding to this need, the 2021 edition focused on breaking economic barriers through skill development.
Key Focus Areas
🔹 Vocational Training: Girls were trained in soap making and beadwork, offering them marketable skills to generate income.
🔹 Mentorship & Career Guidance: Female leaders and entrepreneurs shared their experiences, guiding girls on career opportunities and self-development.
🔹 Health & Well-Being: Sessions covered menstrual health, self-care, and building confidence, reinforcing the importance of holistic well-being.
The impact was immediate—several participants began small businesses, selling handmade soaps and beads, enabling them to contribute financially to their families while continuing their education.
The 2021 series reinforced a key lesson: empowering girls economically is one of the most effective ways to uplift entire communities.
2022: Sustainable Vocational Skills for a Brighter Future
With the momentum from previous years, the 2022 Empowered Girl Series took a bold step forward, introducing a structured vocational skills program under the theme:
“Empowering Girls with Sustainable Vocational Skills.”
The focus went beyond teaching new skills, we pushed to ensuring that the skills learned were sustainable and economically viable. This was a turning point.
Highlights from the 2022 Edition
✔ 60 participants (including 5 boys and 35 girls) and 20 parents/women engaged in intensive vocational training.
✔ Bead making and soap production workshops provided practical tools for financial security and independence.
✔ Sessions on financial literacy and business development helped participants understand how to market and sell their products.
✔ Parental engagement encouraged families to support and nurture their daughters’ aspirations.
The success stories began pouring in—many young women began earning from their crafts, using their income to support their education and reduce financial dependency.
This edition demonstrated that equipping girls with practical, income-generating skills is one of the most sustainable ways to combat school dropouts, early pregnancies, and financial instability.
2023: Inspiring Adolescent Girls to Reach Their Full Potential
While the previous years focused on vocational training and financial empowerment, the 2023 edition shifted its attention to education and academic advancement, under the theme:
“Motivating Adolescent Girls to Advance Their Education and Unlock Their Boundless Potential.”
Education remains one of the most powerful tools for change, yet many adolescent girls still face barriers—financial struggles, peer pressure, and limited resources all stand in the way of their academic success.
